What Will Your Verse Be?

          What exactly is love? When people are asked to describe what love means to them, many times it is inexplicable. The fact that love is so hard to put into a simple phrase, or words; people try to express themselves through art. The use of music and poetry allows artists to express how they are feeling. The song “Just A Kiss” by Lady Antebellum shares a similar theme and tone with two poems To My Dear and Loving Husband by Anne Bradstreet and The Look by Sara Teasdale.
          The poem My Dear and Loving Husband, is a poem in which the theme and tone are very noticeable. The poem itself has an overall theme of commitment and passion. “If ever two were one, then surely we.” (Bradstreet 1) This simple line demonstrates that the woman is absolutely dedicated to her true soul mate. The words in which Bradstreet uses to capture the way the woman feels towards her husband are so captivating. “I prize thy love more than whole mines of gold, Or all the riches that the East doth hold.” (Bradstreet 5-6) The song “Just A Kiss” relates to this poem because of the sense of devotion. “I’ve never opened up to anyone, so hard to hold back when I’m holding you in my arms” (Lady Antebellum” these lyrics can be interrupted to connect with the poem. The love between the wife and husband in the poem and the lyrics to the song, people who are in love must truly be comfortable with their partner.
          The Look is another poem that can easily relate to the song “Just A Kiss”. In the poem, a mere look caused an instant love. “But Colin only looked at me and never kissed me at all.” (Teasdale 3-4) The look itself is meaningful because it gives the reader almost a sense of desire. The song also brings out the theme of desire. “Just a shot in the dark that you just might be the one I’ve been waiting for my whole life” (Lady Antebellum) the readers are attracted to this want, this desire of knowing whether the love will work, or if the love will actually occur.
          The general tone of both the poems and of the song is that happiness, which makes people want to know more. Although the poems may be different in that My Dear and Loving Husband and The Look have different themes, the way that tone that allows the readers to truly feel what the writer has written.  The combination of music and poetry allows people to connect to the words and the type of sound it is said in.
