"It's Just An Illusion"

What is an illusion? An illusion is something that deceives by producing a false or misleading impression of reality. Throughout the play “A Streetcar Named Desire” by Tennessee Williams, the play itself revolves around illusions. Stella, Blanche’s sister says to Eunice, “I couldn’t go on believing her story and live with Stanley” (Stella, 1232) what this excerpt from the play states that Stella was over being the mediator in her home. Stella in this play was the “rope” in the game of tug of war between her sister Blanche and her husband Stanley. When a person such as Stella who is in a fragile state (being pregnant), the added stress of the bickering becomes intolerable. With the lies and the deceit from her sister, the blunt truth from her husband, how could someone stuck in the middle deal with all of the facts put in front of them? Prior to Blanche’s birthday party, Stanley and Stella have a talk about Blanche’s past. At this time, Stella becomes overwhelmed with what Stanley is telling her. “I hope you’re pleased with your doings. I never had so much trouble swallowing food in my life, looking at that girl’s face and the empty chair!” (Stella, 1219) Stella does not know what to do in the case of siding with her sister or siding with her husband.
Many people today are going through similar situations. Some people going through this are couples. Sometimes third parties attempt to “put their noses” into other people’s relationships. People have illusions as to what relationships are supposed to be like.  Everyone expects a couple to be happy, no problems, always getting along, but when a couple starts to have issues; their friends, family, and outside parties want to barge in to tell their side of what is going on. For example, a friend of the girlfriend found out some details about the guy. The girlfriend may or may not approach her boyfriend to see what is really going on. When confronted the boyfriend could then deceive his girlfriend, and she would have no idea what to do. Just like in “A Streetcar Named Desire”, people are put in the middle of situations, where they have to make sensible decisions on what side to choose.  Not knowing whether to choose sides is what causes problems.  When in love people are sometimes blinded.
